Skunks are animals that belong to the Mephitidae family and the most common species that is found in North America is the Striped Skunk or the Mephitis mephitis. In some parts of the US and the UK, skunks are even domesticated.
In the wild, skunks are highly omnivorous, and feed on a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare, bringing changes to their diet in line with the changing seasons. Their diet includes both animal and plant material. As far as animal material is concerned, skunks feed on smaller rodents, lizards, moles, frogs, earthworms, larvae, smaller snakes, and eggs. They often invade gardens and other areas in human homes in search of their favorite food, digging up garden spaces and more in the process.
On the vegetarian front, skunks prefer to feed on a variety of grasses, fungi, berries, roots, and nuts. This part of their dietary need to see them invade gardens, lawns, and other areas on our properties. Skunks possess excellent senses of smell and hearing although their vision is quite poor. Their poor eyesight makes them susceptible to death by vehicular traffic in populated areas and on highways.
The anal scent glands of a skunk emit a vile odor that is part of the defense mechanism of a skunk. This ability of the skunk may keep the animal safe from possible predators, but it sure creates a lot of problems for the animals that come in its way as well as humans who unwittingly scare the small creature, only to smell the noxious odor and then spend hours trying to get rid of it completely.
